Like many emotional difficulties, depression occurs on a continuum from mild (i.e., upset, “down” but functioning) to serious (i.e., not able to engage in day to day activities, perhaps thoughts of self-harm). My job is to help you learn about your depression and find ways to treat it. The latter may include medication, particularly if there is a family history of depression or other emotional upsets. That said, I don’t believe that medication is necessarily an essential adjunct to treatment, and any treatment decisions are made jointly.
